چکیده

This paper describes several aspects of the process of lexical acquisition for one of the most comprehensive applications in natural language processing knowledge-based machine translation. Specifically, the paper concentrates on those components of the lexicon that centrally relate to the task of processing meaning. The usability of the comprehensive ontological semantic lexicon exceeds NLP and extends to theoretical descriptive linguistics and its other applications. Acquisition of lexical knowledge is a crucial component of building natural language processing applications. The requirements for lexical knowledge differ across different applications. Some of them require only a small amount of information. For example, a lexicon supporting a spelling checker must, at a minimum, only list all the possible word forms in a language. Some other applications require vast quantities of diverse kinds of data. For example, a comprehensive text analysis system may require information about word boundary determination (useful for compounding languages, such as Swedish, where the lexical entries would often match not complete words but parts of compound words); information about inflectional and derivational morphology, syntax, semantics and pragmatics of a lexical unit as well as possible connections among knowledge elements at these various levels. In this document, we describe lexical acquisition for a semantic analyzer viewed as a component of a knowledge-based machine translation system. The lexicon whose construction we illustrate has been and still is under development at NMSU CRL. Work on this lexicon has been an integral part of the development of ontological semantics , a semantic theory for computational applications and a practical approach to automatic treatment of meaning in texts. Over the years, our work involved, on the one hand, the development of general ideas about lexicon structure and content and, on the other, development of actual semantic lexicons for English, Spanish and Chinese. The utility of these lexicons extends beyond natural language processing to the needs of language description proper. The lexicons are flexible as to the grain size of description, thus absorbing and actually implementing the idea of variable-depth semantics (Nirenburg and Raskin 1986, 2001). 1. The production of lexical categories (VP) and functional categories (copula) at the initial stage of child L2 acquisition

This is a longitudinal case study of two Farsi-speaking children learning English: ‘Bernard’ and ‘Melissa’, who were 7;4 and 8;4 at the start of data collection. The research deals with the initial state and further development in the child second language (L2) acquisition of syntax regarding the presence or absence of copula as a functional category, as well as the role and degree of L1 influe...

The Effect of Interaction on Lexical Acquisition

This research showed that appropriate input and suitable contexts for interaction among students can lead to successful  second language acquisition (SLA). This study based on Swain's (2005) notion of collaborative dialogue, aimed to study whether EFL learners participating in negotiation of meaning based tasks collaborate with each other and, if so, to investigate the role of this behavior in ...

The role of Persian causative markers in the acquisition of English causative verbs

This project investigates the relationship between lexical semantics and causative morphology in the acquisition of causative/inchoative-related verbs in English as a foreign language by Iranian speakers. Results of translation and picture judgment task show although L2 learners have largely acquired the correct lexico-syntactic classification of verbs in English, they were constrained by ...

On Situating the Stance of Estrogen in the Acquisition and Recall of L2 Lexical Items: A Biological Look

The present study examined whether the advantage of females on L2 vocabulary recall and acquisition is partly as a result of estrogen secretion or not. In this regard, through volunteer and convenience sampling 15 intermediate EFL female participants aged between 23-31 were selected from the subject pool of 55 participants. The participants were studying at Iranian Language Center located in Ba...

Acquisition of English Prenominal and Postnominal Genitives

This study examined the acquisition of prenominal and postnominal genitives by Iranian EFL learners. Two variables were considered: possessive categories and language proficiency. We considered the influence of possessive categories such as lexical modifier, semantic relationship, and weight and syntactic complexity on genitive alternations by Iranian EFL learners. Also, we examined whether the...

Lexical and Grammatical Collocations in Writing Production of EFL Learners

Lewis (1993) recognized significance of word combinations including collocations by presenting lexical approach. Because of the crucial role of collocation in vocabulary acquisition, this research set out to evaluate the rate of collocations in Iranian EFL learners' writing production across L1 and L2. In addition, L1 interference with L2 collocational use in the learner' writing samples was st...
